Smart Home for Renters
Written by renters, for renters. Every device is installed in an apartment where drilling is not an option.

How We Test

Every device is installed in a real apartment with no drilling allowed. We live with it for at least two weeks, then remove it and check the wall. We score install ease, removability, portability and whether a landlord would object โ€” then we publish the score, good or bad.

You cannot install new blinds in a rental โ€” the brackets are screwed into the wall and the blinds belong to the landlord. But you can motorize the curtains that are already hanging there. Every device in this guide clips onto or rolls up against an existing rod, so nothing is drilled, nothing is replaced, and everything comes down in two minutes when you move.

We tested five renter-friendly options over four weeks in a bedroom with a standard 1-inch curtain rod and a roller-blind window.

Quick Picks

Device Price Works with Renter Score Best for
SwitchBot Curtain 3 $89 Rod curtains (rod 0.6โ€“1.2 in) 9/10 Best overall
Aqara Roller Shade Driver E1 $75 Existing roller blind chain 9/10 Roller blinds
SwitchBot Curtain 3 (U-Rail) $89 U-shaped tracks 8/10 Track curtains
Soma Smart Shades 2 $129 Rod curtains + tilt blinds 8/10 Premium, HomeKit
IKEA FYRTUR $129+ Replaces the blind 5/10 Only if you own the place

How Renter-Friendly Smart Blinds Work

There are three honest options, and only two of them are actually renter-friendly.

  1. A curtain robot. A small motorized unit hangs on your existing rod and drives the curtain fabric along it by friction. Nothing is attached to the wall.
  2. A blind-chain driver. A motor sits over the existing beaded chain on a roller blind and turns it. It clips on with a bracket and comes off by hand.
  3. Replacing the blind. New brackets, new holes, and you have to store the landlord's blind somewhere for the rest of your lease. We do not recommend this for renters.

What you do not need: a drill, an electrician, a new curtain rod, or permission from anyone.

1. SwitchBot Curtain 3 โ€” Best Overall

SwitchBot Curtain 3

Price: $89 | Renter Score: 9/10 | Affiliate: Check price on Amazon โ†’

SwitchBot Curtain 3 clamps onto your existing rod and pulls the curtain open and closed. It took us nine minutes to install including app pairing, and it left no mark at all on the rod or the wall.

What we liked

What we did not like

Best for: the standard rental with a curtain rod and a landlord who will never know.

2. Aqara Roller Shade Driver E1 โ€” Best for Roller Blinds

Price: $75 | Renter Score: 9/10 | Affiliate: Check price on Amazon โ†’

If your rental came with roller blinds (very common in newer apartment buildings), this is the better buy. It clips over the existing beaded chain and turns it, so the blind itself never changes.

What we did not like

Best for: modern apartments with roller blinds and a chain.

3. Soma Smart Shades 2 โ€” Best Premium

Price: $129 | Renter Score: 8/10 | Affiliate: Check price on Amazon โ†’

Soma is the premium option: a well-built unit with a solar panel in the box and native Apple HomeKit support without a bridge.

What we liked

What we did not like

Best for: HomeKit households, or Venetian blinds you cannot replace.

4. What About Just Buying Smart Blinds?

Price: $129+ | Renter Score: 5/10 | Affiliate: Check price on Amazon โ†’

IKEA's FYRTUR and similar motorized blinds are good products, and plenty of articles recommend them to renters. We do not, and here is why: they replace the blind, which means removing the landlord's blind, storing it somewhere for the length of your lease, and putting it back before you move out. If it gets damaged in storage, that comes out of your deposit.

Score breakdown: install ease 0/3 (brackets must be screwed in), removability 1/3 (you must re-hang the original), no-drill 0/2, portability 2/1, lease compliance 1/1.

Buy these when you own the place.

Renter Readiness Score

Dimension Points What it measures
Install ease 0โ€“3 3 = clips on, no tools
Removability 0โ€“3 3 = leaves no trace
No-drill 0โ€“2 2 = zero holes
Portability 0โ€“1 1 = fits in a moving box
Lease compliance 0โ€“1 1 = no permission needed

Frequently Asked Questions

Will a curtain robot damage my curtain rod? No. The clamp grips with rubber pads and does not scratch a metal or wooden rod. We checked ours after four weeks and found no marks.

Can I use one on a very wide window? SwitchBot and Soma both handle a single curtain panel up to about 3 metres of fabric on a smooth rod. For a double-width window you generally need one unit per side.

Do these work with blackout curtains? Yes, but heavy fabric needs a smooth metal rod. On a rough wooden rod, a heavy blackout curtain can slip โ€” SwitchBot includes a small roller accessory for exactly this.

Will my landlord notice? Not from the outside. There are no holes and no permanent fixtures. If your lease bans "alterations", a clip-on device is not an alteration โ€” but check the wording before you buy.

What if the power goes out? The curtain stays where it is and you can still open it by hand. The motor disengages when you pull gently.
